My Story.

As a child of the Civil Right Era and Black Power Movement, I was deeply impacted by the nightly footage of Civil Rights protestors being brutalized. As impactful as the daily televised accounts, were the nightly conversations between my parents relaying the daily micro and macro aggressions they faced on their jobs everyday. The Black Arts Movement, the music, dance, poetry, film of that era, also made an indelible mark on my life. I saw the influence that art can wield in catalyzing progressive social change. With that history and personal experiences of “being a black woman” in America, In 2010 I created This Light: Sounds For Social Change a radio series that featured artists activists who through their music, poetry, film dance foment social change. Guests included Ayanna Gregory, Mumu Fresh, Be Steadwell, Sonia Sanchez, The Lost Bois, Chrystylez Bacon, John Chambers, Venus Thrash, Rebel Diaz, I Am Wet Paint, Sophia Dawson and so many more. The series ended in 2017 after the community powered radio station closed down. Shortly after, I was invited to be one of several rotating hosts on WPFW Pacifica’s local radio station,Sophie’s Parlor, the longest running series by and about women, but for everyone. I went on hiatus in 2018 to promote my first documentary, BackBurner Dreams. But I’m a bit ahead of myself. In 2013, singer/songwriter, filmmaker Be Steadwell asked me to co-produce her thesis film, Vow of Silence, I was bitten by the film bug during the production process. And on Mother’s Day 2018, I premiered by first documentary BackBurner Dreams. in 2020 I was asked to direct Liberation – Lumpkin’s Legacy also a Black women centered documentary which premiered Feb. 28, 2025 in Washington DC.
