Prof. Herron and I traveled to New Richmond, Ohio on Juneteenth. I was honored to introduce Prof. Herron, the great, great granddaughter of Mary Lumpkin, the touchstone of the documentary.
I sat down with Ricardo to talk about how the documentary came to be.
AIN'T I A BLACK WOMAN -Liberation, Lumpkin's Legacy is a documentary inspired by the resilience and triumph of an enslaved Black woman Mary Lumpkin. The women featured in the film through their art, activism, organizations are working to narrow long entrenched racial disparities in marginalized communities. Currently in post production, release 2024.
The co-founder of SWAP DC, Zsameria, through her culturally centered clothing, book, household items swaps, brings the message of climate change and the importance of making choices that help save Mother Earth. "There is no planet B."
Be Steadwell is an artist, filmmaker, singer songwriter who through her art centers the Black LGBTQ community and Black women Be's talents have taken her around the world.
Melissa Princess Best uses her rap and Hip Hop lyrics and accompanying workshops to heal Black mother daughter relationships and strengthen the self-image of Black girls.
A core organizer of Black Lives Matter DC and co-founder of Harriet's Dreams, Nee Nee says, coming form a family of activists, "I didn't choose the movement, the movement chose me."
Zyah is a 9 year versatile rapper whose lyrics rally around the fight for justice in Black and Brown communities. One of her role models is Tamika Mallory. Zyah is a straight A student as well.

The film allows audiences to see themselves in the lives of the three women featured in the film, to relate to their stories, challenges and to remember their own passions and personal goals.
